Class Descriptions

 

We offer many classes throughout the week in various styles and dance genres. Classes are offered to dancers ages 3 to adult. Due to working parent schedules, most classes are scheduled in the afternoon; however if you would like a morning or early afternoon class time, simply bring in 5 of your friends to register with you and we will create a class just for you guys.

NOTE: Ballet is a required discipline here at Dance Elite. It is the basis of all dance forms and is necessary in gaining a true understanding and growth in the art of dance. The only classes in which ballet is not required are Tots ‘n Tumble and Acrobatics/Tumbling.

 

Pre-School Classes:

TOTS ‘n TUMBLE (AGES 3-4): This class is designed to present the basic fundamentals of movement including creative movement, coordination, and rhythm. Simple aspects of ballet will be introduced also. Dancers will explore the world of dance using themes, props and visuals to help heighten the imagination and create a keener understanding of materials. The last portion of class time is used to introduce simply acrobatic tumbling such as rolls and stretching techniques. Instructors always keep it fun and interesting with fun theme days and events.

PRE-SCHOOL BALLET/TAP/TUMBLE (AGES 4-5): This class continues with the fundamentals of coordination, balance and rhythm as basic ballet skills are introduced. Dancers will begin to build a foundation for tap skills using upbeat music and props to enhance an understanding of rhythm and coordination. The last portion of class time is used to continue introducing basic acrobatic tumbling and stretching techniques. Of course we will have our theme classes and events in this class too!                                                                       45 MINUTES

 

Combination / Technique Classes

BEGINNER BALLET (AGES 5-7): An introduction to ballet technique begins at this level. Ballet is presented in a fun, yet educational manner using themes, props and visuals to keep the creative process flowing while instilling poise, grace, and strength as the dancers advance and become more confident.                                   30 MINUTES

 

BEGINNER TAP (AGES 5-7): Coordination, rhythm, articulation and timing are all a part of this class as dancers expand their tap vocabulary and work to perfect skills and rhythms. Always a fun challenge for young dancers.

BEGINNER JAZZ (AGES 6-8): This high-paced, fun-filled class uses upbeat modern music and beats to energize the dancers as they are presented with basic jazz skills such as isolations, jazz techniques, musicality, rhythm as well as strength and stretch techniques which will lead to leaps, jumps and turns in their future jazz studies.

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED BALLET (AGES 9 & UP): The foundation of all dance; ballet is extremely important in creating a sound understanding of movement, muscle memory and coordination. Dancers will explore many aspects of classical ballet including barre and centre fundamentals, footwork, jumps, leaps, turns as well as the correct placement and carriage of the body, arms and head.                                       30 MINUTES - 1 HOUR

 

INT/ADV TAP (AGES 8 & UP): Classes progress with rhythmic challenges and exercises designed to enhance an understanding of musicality and timing. Various styles from Classical, Broadway, Stomp and Rhythm will be explored.

INT/ADV JAZZ (AGES 9 & UP): Classes progress with techniques valuable in expanding jazz vocabulary such as jumps, turns, leaps and turns. Dancers will also begin to use their own individual “style” as a key to add that special flair that makes jazz dance so exciting to watch. Various styles will be explored from Musical Theater, to pop, to contemporary, to free-style.                                                                                                             30-45 MINUTES

 

Specialty Classes

HIP HOP TOTS (AGES 5-6): A fun high energy class using today’s best beats to present dancers with an understanding of rhythm, coordination and stylized movements. Sure to be a fave for the young ones wanting to show their personality and strut their stuff!

ACROBATICS/TUMBLING (AGES 5 & UP): (Beginner to advanced levels) Floor tumbling focusing on strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. Students will begin working on basic skills such as rolls, cartwheels and handstands; then will continue to progress to limbers, walkovers, handsprings, aerials and passes.       30-45 MINUTES

 

CLOGGING (AGES 6 & UP): Toe tappin’, foot stompin’ fun! This class uses high paced music to present basic clogging steps teaching rhythm and timing. Dancers will learn various styles such as traditional, buck and contemporary. We use varied music genres from country pop and incorporate that into our choreography style. (Dancers must be enrolled in tap.)

“NO GIRLS ALLOWED” HIP HOP/ACRO (BOYS ONLY CLASS) (AGES 6 & UP): This class combines jazz and hip hop techniques and also incorporates basic tumbling skills which are ideal for guys with their great upper body strength.

HIP HOP (AGES 7 & UP): Dancers love these energetic classes filled with a variety of rhythms, styles and speeds. Popular (age appropriate) music, high energy and smiling faces set the scene during these classes where dancers study pop style, street style and free style movements.                     

30 MINUTES

 

LYRICAL/CONTEMPORARY (AGES 7 & UP): A very expressive form of dance incorporating a mixture of various styles such as ballet/jazz/modern to form its own beautiful genre in which dancers uses music and lyrics to tell a story through movements and emotion. A class favorite amongst older dancers.       

30-45 MINUTES

 

MODERN/IMPROVISATION (AGES 11 & UP): More commonly known today as “contemporary” dance, this class consists of floor and centre exercises enabling dancers to gain an in depth understanding of how the body works as a whole and focuses on using the core/center of the body to initiate movement. Many exercises center on a Pilates basis. This is a challenging and fulfilling class and is among the top choice for our older dancers.       

45 MINUTES – 1 HR

 

POINTE (AGES 12 & UP): (At teacher’s discretion). This form of classical ballet instills poise, grace, strength, and control in the dancer. Class will begin working strength and control at the barre then progress to centre work and across the floor combinations using classic box toe pointe shoes.

MUSICAL THEATRE (AGES 7 & UP): Musical Theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. This fun filled class can vary from lyrical to tap to jazz to song and dance movements and allows the dancer to express themselves through various sequences taken from plays, television shows and also movies.

ELITE COMPANY DANCERS (AGES 7 & UP): Competition & Performance company. Audition required to be a part of this performance company.
